    Australia doubles scholarships to Maldives

Australian government has doubled the scholarship opportunities to Maldivian nationals.

Speaking at the “Australia Awards 2011” ceremony held last evening at Traders Hotel Male, Australian High Commissioner Kathy Klugman said scholarships were doubled this year as a result of President Mohamed Nasheed’s intervention with the Australian government

She also said as a result of the interactions with Australian government by President Nasheed, “we’ve just now taken [Australia-Maldives] relationship to an entirely new level.”

According to President’s Office, 31 scholarships will be provided to the Maldives under the prestigious ‘Australia Awards’ programme. Six out of the 31 scholars were awarded as an Australian Leadership Award Scholarship (ALAS) and the remaining 25 scholars as the Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), the office said.

Following President Nasheed’s meeting with the then Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Canberra earlier this year, the Australian government announced Australia’s aid programme for the Maldives, including an increased number of scholarships, the President’s Office added.
